Chaudé, 1819. 2 tomes in-8 : xlvj (mal chiffrés xlviij), 456 pp. 4ff. de Table ; 4 planches hors-texte gravées (la première planche a été divisée et se présente reliée sous forme de deux planches, les trois autres sont dépliantes) / xvj, 472 pp. (quelques piqûres et/ou rousseurs, léger cerne clair de mouillure ancienne sur quelques feuillets). en 2 volumes demi-toile bleue, dos muets, plats papier marbré noir et bleu, tranches jaunes chinées de rouge (reliure moderne). Tout à fait bon exemplaire de l'Edition originale du premier tirage de cet ouvrage capital dans l'histoire de la médecine (premier tirage identifiable par son feuillet original a*2 non corrigé au tome I - first state, with the second leaf a*2 uncancelled). Laennec y explique sa nouvelle méthode d'auscultation des patients à l'aide de l'instrument qu'il a inventé : le stéthoscope, invention qui allait révolutionner le diagnostic des maladies du thorax. "En français dans le texte", 226 - Garrison and Morton, 2673 : "Auscultation in the instrumental sense dates from Laennec's invention of the stethoscope (at first merely a roll of stiff paper) with a view to amplifying the sound of the heart's action. The publication of this book revolutionized the study of diseases of the thoracic organs (..) Laennec, perhaps the greatest clinician of his time, died of tuberculosis" / Garrison and Morton, 3219 : "Laennec is remembered for his invention of the stethoscope and for his books on auscultation. Garrison considers the latter the foundation stone of modern knowledge of diseases of the chest. Himself tuberculous, Laennec was considered the greatest teacher of his time on tuberculosis. Indeed, it was in elaboration of his investigation of the disease that he invented the stethoscope. He established the fact that all phtisis is tuberculous, described pneumothorax and distinguished pneumonia from the various kinds of bronchitis and from pleuritis".
